What happens to skin as it ages?

Many forces contribute to aging skin, chief among them is exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, which prematurely break down your skin. On top of this, you gradually lose the structural support in your skin with each passing year — namely your collagen and elastin.

Between the premature breakdown of your connective fibers and the loss of support, those expressions that you make tend to linger a bit longer on your face.

Not to mention, throughout your life, every time you smile, squint, or frown, your expression lines become increasingly etched into your skin, especially around your eyes, forehead, and brows, which are precisely the areas that Botox targets.

How does Botox reduce the appearance of wrinkles?

Botox is FDA-approved to temporarily make moderate to severe frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines look better in adults. It does this with onabotulinumtoxin A, which your provider injects into the muscles that contract to form the lines on the upper half of your face. The Botox temporarily paralyzes these muscles, releasing their hold on your skin and eliminating wrinkles.

What is a Botox procedure like?

When you first come in, your Volusia Medical Center provider spends some time examining the fine lines and wrinkles you’d like to address and comes up with the best plan. Every patient’s face is unique, and your doctor ensures that your results look natural.

The procedure itself takes less than 10 minutes as your provider strategically injects the Botox into areas that will provide you with the best results. You may experience some mild bruising or redness at the site of the injections, but these typically resolve themselves in short order.

When will I see results from Botox?

Botox begins to go to work over the 24-48 hours following your visit. Each morning when you wake up, you’ll be greeted by skin that becomes smoother as the lines around your eyes, brows, and forehead fade away.

How long do Botox results last?

Results vary from patient to patient, but the average duration of results is approximately four months. Once your lines begin to reappear, you simply return to Volusia Medical Center for a follow-up treatment to maintain your great results.
